You've probably heard the old line that people don’t quit jobs, they quit bosses. It holds true everywhere, including at my company.
Here’s a quick story (names changed, naturally). Maria was a direct support professional. She was sharp, caring, driven, and loved the mission. But after six months, she was ready to quit. Money and clients weren't the issue. Her supervisor was. The boss rarely listened, broke promises, and only appeared to criticize mistakes. Eventually, even Maria’s passion couldn't overcome her frustration.
Why People Actually Leave
Sure, exit interviews usually cite pay, workload, or growth. But peel back the layers and you'll usually find a manager at the core. Leaders either make life better or harder. Employees want to feel seen, heard, and valued. If that’s missing, they'll walk. Or worse, they’ll mentally clock out but keep collecting a paycheck.
I’ve learned firsthand that misaligned leadership is expensive. You can’t fix a broken team with free snacks or fancy policies. If employees can't trust their leaders, your mission and brand lose all meaning.
And if you want to bring out the best in your team, start by setting a personal example worth following.
Walking Your Talk as a Leader
Being an aligned leader simply means doing what you say you'll do. It means delivering honest feedback kindly. Be someone your team respects, not due to your title, but through your consistent actions.
Leadership isn't flashy. It's quietly effective. It looks like supervisors lending a hand, honestly seeking input, genuinely celebrating wins, and handling hard conversations openly.
Remember, as a leader, every interaction either earns trust or breeds cynicism.
Three Practical Moves to Lead Better
Show up fully. Spend a few focused minutes each day genuinely listening to your team. People follow leaders who show they care.
Always keep your promises. Even small ones count. "I'll get back to you" must mean exactly that. Nothing erodes trust faster than empty words.
Tell the truth with kindness. Don’t be harsh or overly soft. Just straightforward and fair.
Let’s Talk About It
Ever wanted to quit or stay because of your boss? I'd love to hear your story. The more we talk openly about supervisor-team dynamics, the better workplace we’ll build.
Leadership isn't about your title. It's about being real, coaching others, and sometimes admitting when you need to grow yourself. Every interaction counts. That’s the engine behind retention and great teams.
For the people,
Leland
